This new edition presents the fundamentals of human physiology to students in health sciences, physical education, and biological sciences. The authors, distinguished physiologists, collaborate with ten other field specialists to create the most accurate and current physiology text available. Human Physiology, 3/e presents physiology as a relevant and exciting discipline emphasizing many unanswered questions to stimulate critical thinking with an investigative approach. Concise chapters offer flexibility and more diversity than competing texts. Features: * Important areas of applied or clinical physiology are covered in seperate chapters (see chapters 10,17,24,25,27,29), providing depth coverage essential to a broader understanding. * Separate, up-to-date chapters on exercise physiology, sexual physiology, and environmental physiology (new in the 3/e) are popular areas of interest for students. * Basic cellular and molecular biology concepts are introduced before systemic physiology allowing the student to integrate concepts of organic and systemic physiology with basic cell physiology (see chapters 3,4,5,6). * Review of basic principles of chemistry and physics (chapter 2) allow students who have weak science backgrounds to gain understanding of these important topics. * Introductory chapter provides an historical introduction to science and physiology and an introduction to scientific method, basic computations and graphic analysis, providing an important foundation for understanding the tools of modern science and physiology. New to this edition: * New chapter (28) on body Defenses and the Immune Response expands and updates important new information on immunity. * New chapter (29) on Environmental Physiology presents interesting and pertinent information within this expanding field, focusing on the physiological effects of environmental stress. * New or updated Focus Box for each chapter presents latest information on contemporary issues, relating research, and clinical applications. Each Focus Box ends with a question that stimulates synthesis and assessment. * New problem-solving questions at the end of each chapter test mastery of conceptual understanding and reinforce critical thinking. * Each chapter opens with a vignette that illustrates how the key concepts of the chapter are relevant to a common physiological situation or condition.
