German language texts. Tan linen boards (First series) Enbossed and gilt publisher's cloth (Second Series). Black leather title block on spines with gilt lettering (First Series), gilt embossed design and text on spines of Second Series. Issues 1+2 are continuously paginated, as are issues 3+4, 5+6, 7+8, 9+10 and 11+12. Illustrations, music. Original graphics as well as high quality lithographed reproductions. A Complete but mis-matched run of this very important German Periodical. The first two physical volumes contain three issues each, with their original covers bound in. This comprises the entirety of the first series. These binding are soiled, stained and utilitarian, with the applied leather spine labels. The contents are clean, the endpapers soiled. The second series, also made up of six issues, are contained in three cloth bound volumes of 2 issues each. These do not have the original wraps bound in. These binding are slightly better condition-wise, but there is smudging inside each one on the endpapers. The contents of all three of these are clean. Although an assembled set, all graphics are present and each issue is one of 1000 copies. Quite rare, and a steady seller at auctions in the $1100+ range is you can find them. The magazine contains numerous first printings, including the first publication by the young Franz Kafka: eight pieces from "Contemplation" (issue 1) and "Conversation with the Prayer". Conversation with the drunk" (issue 8). Further text contributions come from Rilke, Heinrich Mann, Sternheim, Dauthendey, Dehmel, Brod, Borchardt, Schickele, Carl Einstein, Musil, Alfred Richard Meyer and many others. - The picture panels, which Alfred Walter Heymel was responsible for selecting, were included at the end of each booklet and show, among others, works of art by Nolde, Heckel, Liebermann, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pascin (colored line etching), Th. Th. Heine; the original graphics come from Laboureur, Vrieslander, Edward Gordon Craig and others. - With the tables of contents of the two episodes, music notes and publisher advertisements for issues 1-6. - As well as an insert from the publisher stating that the editors and not the publisher are responsible for the content of the magazine. G Covers have general wear, water staining, discoloration. Peeling and fading on title blocks.
