Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

N.p. ca. 1937-1938, n.p., probably Indian made. Color sewn leather, very good, Chinese text partially faded, made from colored leather, . *** **** *** . . . . . * This is an Indian theatre-made "A.V.G." [AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP"] & "FLYING TIGERS" "Blood Chit." In Chinese these were known as: "RENWU ZHENGMING SHU." * These were commonly made in India, and sold to A.V.G. members or to those who flew the "Hump" and brought to Burma or Kunming, China where the "A.V.G." [AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP"] or "FLYING TIGERS" were based. The first " Blood Chits" were acquired in India and attached to flight clothing first in 1937 by the "A.V.G." [AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP"] and later by other "FLYING TIGERS" through 1945. Remember America did not officially join the war effort until December 7, 1941 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Up to that point all American personnel stationed in Burma and Yunnan province [Kunming] were all volunteers, civilians, and members of the Chinese Air Force, commanded by Lt. General Claire L. Chennault. There was a 'defacto' distance from any official American involvement in the war against the Japanese from 1937-Dec. 7, 1941. * During the period 1937 through the end of the war in China, August 1945 "Blood Chits" were commonly sewed to the back of American fighter pilots flight jackets & flight suits. *** ABOUT A.V.G. [AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP] UNIFORMS: The "A.V.G." [AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP"] or "FLYING TIGERS" did not have uniform or similar U.S. Government issued uniforms that matched. The uniforms brought to Burma and China represented the individual service member's former unit prior to joining the new volunteer force in Burma and China. Therefore there was a wide variety of Navy, Army Air Force, Marine uniforms worn by each volunteer. . Since there was no standardization of uniforms, and in addition to the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army Air corps, and U.S. Marine uniforms individual pilots and support members just brought and wore their military issue and locally bought British Bush Jackets, shorts and shirts matching the sultry weather of Burma. The flight suits or flight clothing varied a great deal. Each pilot wore the clothing of his choice. * GREAT VARIETY OF "BLOOD CHITS:" "Blood Chits" were locally made, copied and they too had a wide variety of sizes, styles and the illustrations varied a great deal. They were made from two main types of material. First the leather example, and followed later by the cloth type with either stenciled Republic of China flag and Chinese text. In all cases any "Blood Chit" was better than nothing so pilots were just happy to have anything that would inform the Chinese to rescue them and get them back to friendly forces. * PLACEMENT OF THE "BLOOD CHITS:" The "BLOOD CHIT" was commonly placed on the back of the uniform for easy recognition. It was also sewed inside of some flight jackets by those leery of standing out after a parachute jump from an injured fighter plane as an aerial target. Chinese peasants were not always aware from a distance if a downed airman was a Japanese or foreign ally. When the Chinese observed the "Blood Chit" they made great efforts to hide, nurse and transport the American pilot back to friendly lines. * THE TEXT OF THE "BLOOD CHIT:" The text was standardized. It stated in Chinese: "This western [foreign] person has come to China to help in the war effort. Soldiers and civilians, one and all, should rescue and protect him." Our example has hand written Chinese text, not the very late stenciled variety which is always questionable as to the period it was made. The earlier examples have hand-written Chinese text, much later this was stenciled, that is where the reproductions and fakes begin their life. * These "Blood Chits" were often signed by Chiang Kai-Shek [Jian Jieshi] and sealed with his red cinnabar chop. In many cases this was improvised to look 'official' to peasants and Republic of China soldiers with the promise of a cash rew.…
