Written somewhat like a good detective mystery, the author takes us step by step as he uncovers the masking tradition of a people who live mainly in an area in northeastern Zaire known as Ituri, and among whom the Ndaaka are the central ethnic unit. Virtually nothing had been known of the art of the peoples of Ituri, and in this fascinating tale we learn how their art has been recently discovered/rediscovered, and we see examples of the splendid masks that were uncovered. The text takes us into the villages from which the masks emerged and then discusses the masks and the rituals in which they were used.
