Alexander Robert Charles Dallas (1791 1869) was an author, Church of England minister and Rector of Wonston in Hampshire from 1828 to 1869, a member of the family that descended from James Dallas of Rosshire in Scotland. He was born in Colchester, the son of a barrister, the Jamaican born Robert Charles Dallas (1754 1824). His grandfather, Dr. Robert Charles Dallas (1710 1769), was a doctor who amassed a fortune in Jamaica. Dallas was educated at home to age 11, and then at a school in Kennington. Through his father, he became a clerk in the Treasury, in 1805. He went on to be a supplies officer during the Peninsular War. He was present at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Dallas married in 1818. He entered the Middle Temple to study law in 1819. He left soon, and in 1820 matriculated at Worcester College, Oxford, at age 28. There he encountered evangelicals, and did not complete a degree. He was ordained a deacon and then a priest in the Church of England in 1821, and became curate of Radley. viii, 595pp. Approximately 8 inches tall. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition purple cloth boards, black decorative border to the front and blind tooled border to the rear. Page edges good condition tanned and foxed. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition the front hinge is cracked and the webbing can be see, holding well, rear hinge intact. Paste downs good condition plain brown, some damp staining along the top and bottom edges of the rear paste down. End papers good condition plain brown, some damp staining along the top and bottom edges of the rear end papers, some damp staining on the internal free end papers. Title good condition pervious owner s signature along the top edge dated 1876, lightly tanned with some foxing. Pages good condition b/w tissue guarded portrait frontispiece W.H. Mote.
