B01GLS8DTY 1922 signed first edition, The Abingdon Press (NY), 5 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches tall embossed cloth hardbound, no dust jacket, gilt lettering to spine, 160 pp. Very slight rubbing and edgewear to covers. Bumping to tips, especially lower tips. Nicely signed by the author in blue ink on the title page, with a signed and inscribed ('Hearty greetings') photo of the author dated Christmas 1923 laid in. Slight staining to fore page edges, with a couple instances of slight staining to the outer fore margin of a page. Otherwise, apart from minor age toning, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this collection of short stories for young people. ~SP03~ From the publisher's 1922 description: '[A] series of stories of the fashion in which men and women from the most varied groups met the time of crisis in their lives. Each comes to the decisive hour in need of a living word to be spoken from somewhere, and in each case the word comes from one compelling, powerful Book. These stories show how that book lives again in lives made different by its presence.' Lynn Harold Hough (1877 - 1971) - preacher, president of Northwestern University and author of more than 40 books - was born in Cadiz, Ohio, received his undergraduate degree in Ohio and theology degrees from Drew University in New Jersey, holding several pastorates in the Methodist Church in New Jersey, New York, and Maryland, in the years 1898-1914. In 1919 at the age of 42, after serving only five years as professor of historical theology at Garrett Biblical Institute, he was picked as Northwestern University's dynamic new leader. Ill health forced him to leave the position after only two years. After his health improved, Hough returned to his role as preacher, public speaker (on topics ranging from religion and history to public affairs) and professor, as well as being a prolific author of mostly sermons and essays. Contents: A captain of industry; 'Silent night, holy night'; Doing his bit at home; 'Like men'; Tom Tilton in an empty church; Behind the counter; The great gloom and the shining light; The breaking and the making of a home; Behind the plow; 'He went back on his pal'; Mark Snyder inherits the earth; The hatred of Billy McKee; The battle of sentaro; The fire in the heart of the Bishop.
