In recent years, scientists have begun to believe that a substantial portion of chronic diseases, including inflammatory syndromes and cancer, may be causally linked to infectious microorganisms. This volume contains papers originally presented at an October 2002 workshop organized by the Institute of Medicine for the purpose of exploring this rapidly developing field of knowledge. A sampling of topics includes infectious agents and schizophrenia; concurrent HIV/AIDS and malaria in developing countries; and vaccines for the prevention of chronic disease.
