Four volumes, 4to [text block 295 x 222mm], contemporary full tan calf, the boards unusually decorated with gilt roll about edges and panelled with same gilt roll, tree-calf within centre panel and speckled in frame without, the flat spines divided and panelled with gilt triple fillet, red lettering pieces, the compartments with gilt ferns, flowers and cornucopia, board edges and turn-ins gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, silk page markers. VOLUME 1: engraved half-title, double-page map, portrait of Cervantes and 6 plates, [iv], xiv, ccxxiv, 199pp. VOLUME 2: engraved half-title, 9 plates, [iv], 418pp. VOLUME 3: engraved half-title, 7 plates, [ii], xiv, 306pp. VOLUME 4: engraved half-title, 8 plates, [iv], 346pp. Extremities a little rubbed; some mostly light surface damage on leather but board exposed near upper hinge volume 1, near fore-edge on upper board and in one compartment on spine volume 3; Volume 2 water-stained from top to about middle of leaves from half-title to about pp104 and from about pp406 to end - quite marked until pp2, faintly from pp25; Volume 3's upper margin faintly damp-stained from pp283 to end; small burn-hole pp 311 volume 4 affecting a couple of letters recto and verso; some very scattered occasional foxing of text and plates in all volumes. Save for the water staining in volume 2 a good and still attractive set of the grandest edition of Don Quixote. ***A set in what appears to be an identical binding was sold earlier this year in London, the auctioneer describing the binding as 'probably by Antonio de Sancha (d.1790) or his workshop, considered the leading Madrid binders of the period. The gilt-tooling is seemingly identical to some of those used for the copy signed by Antonio de Sancha, which was sold by Sotheby's in 1977 as part of the Phillips collection.'. Staniland (Booksellers) was established in 1972. We occupy a small shop in the centre of a pretty market town in England's smallest county. We have two public rooms and stock antiquarian and modern books, mostly literature, philosophy, music, history, classics, architecture, applied arts, theology and topography. We have a good range of library sets in cloth and leather and, occasionally, fine bindings. We are members of the P.B.F.A., the largest booksellers' organisation in the U.K. The shop is usually open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; appointments to view out of hours can almost always be made at a customer's convenience. Please telephone before setting out if you are travelling far as I cannot always get cover if attending an auction. We are always pleased to receive offers of books for sale.
