The Court of Wards and Liveries was concerned with the collection of feudal dues, such as rent from tenants, guardian and wardship, and livery issues, such as the right to wear a guild's insignia. Beginning under the Tudors, it was increasingly and controversially exploited by monarchs to increase Crown revenue. James I offered to abolish the court in exchange for a yearly income of ?200,000; when Parliament rejected his offer, he further regulated the court instead.
