Intelligent transportation system (ITS) refers to the integration of advanced data and communication technologies that are used in transportation and traffic management systems. It aims at improving the safety, efficiency and sustainability of transportation networks. ITS aims to enhance the driver's experience and reduce traffic congestion. Various ITS technologies are used for management of transport systems including basic systems such as car navigation, traffic signal control systems, container management systems, variable message signs, automatic number plate recognition, etc. Emergency vehicle notification systems, automatic road enforcement, collision avoidance systems, etc. are some of the ITS applications used in the present scenario. This book traces the progress of this discipline and highlights some of its key concepts and applications. It will help the readers in keeping pace with the rapid changes in this field. The topics covered in this extensive book deal with the core aspects of intelligent transportation systems.
