Titel: Intriguing Letter Concerning His Efforts to ...
DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: Writing on black bordered Cromwell Place mourning paper, Millais writes to ‘Dear Harry’ to say that he has ‘seen Lord (unclear name - probably ‘Bury’) about your Brother’s case and he is to do what he can.’ He goes on to advise his correspondent ‘Say nothing (underlined) about it at the office but you may write to your sister and tell her’. He concludes by saying ‘I have seen him but don’t write to (unclear name) about the matter’. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Co-founder of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood with Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Millais is writing in this letter at the peak of a career that would see him become the first artist to be awarded a hereditary title when he was made a baronet in 1885. The individual Millais refers to having consulted seems likely to be the soldier and politician Lord Bury [William Coutts Keppel (1832-1894) later 7th Earl of Albemarle]. Millais would have known Bury as both had served in the Artists Rifle Association - a volunteer corps of artists, sculptors etc who signed up either to commit to service or to become involved in a purely honorary supporting capacity (Millais opting for this latter form of involvement). The regimental badge of the Association famously bore the head of Mars (God of War) and Minerva (Goddess of Wisdom) with the regimental slogan running ‘Mars, he was the God of war, and didn't stop at trifles. Minerva was a bloody whore. So hence The Artists' Rifles.’ DETAILED CONDITION REPORT : 4 pp with text in black ink on 2 pages, each page measuring 3.5 inches x 5.3 inches.
