Beschreibung
Amsterdam, Hondium, 16mo. (12 by 6 cm), pictorial engraved title page, 352, 70, [9] p., plus 3 folding plates and table. ***CONTENT: Clüver (1580-1622) was a German antiquary, historian, and geographer, and arguably the founder of historical geography. Via his extensive travels and study of classical literature, he became well versed in both the geography of antiquity and of his day. This treatise, published posthumously, was the first "modern geography", and became a standard geographical textbook. Chapters summarize global geographical concepts (oceans, equator, climates, etc.) and provide details of the geography of the countries and peoples of Europe, Asia, Africa, and parts of the Americas (noting Florida, California, Mexico, Peru, etc.). The 70 p. appendix by Petr. Bertio is titled "Breviarium totius orbis terrarum" -- it provides historical and cultural details, and includes a list of Roman emperors. ***CONDITION: This is a near VG copy bound in contemporary full vellum. Save for soiling, the covers are complete and well preserved. No marking or lettering on the backstrip. The text pages are typically fresh, clean and bright, though the pages at front are closely trimmed; title page with chipping to the free edge. Joints and hinges strong; binding very firm. No prior ownership evidence. This is a useful copy of a scarce publication. Not in BMNH. International shipping will be extra for this volume, but only at my cost.
