First Edition. Original wrappers. Label on front wrapper, else Near Fine. 'In 1973 the IEEE awarded him the IEEE Medal of Honor, 'For a major contribution to world-wide communication through the conception of the traveling wave tube embodying a new principle of amplification' ' (www [dot] ieeeghn [dot] org/wiki/index [dot] php/Rudolf_Kompfner). 'The invention of the TWT is widely attributed to Rudolf Kompfner in 1942 1943, although Nils Lindenblad, working at RCA (Radio Corporation of America) in the USA did patent a device in May 1940[3] that was remarkably similar to Kompfner's TWT.[4]:2 Kompfner independently invented the TWT, and built the first working TWT, in a British Admiralty radar lab during World War II.[5] His first sketch of his TWT is dated November 12, 1942, and he built his first TWT in early 1943.[4]:3[6] The TWT was refined by Kompfner,[6] John Pierce,[7] and Lester M. Field at Bell Labs' (en [dot] wikipedia [dot] org/wiki/Traveling-wave_tube). 'The Kompfner papers [in Stanford University's Archives] span the years 1937 to 1977 and concentrate primarily on his research interests while at Bell Laboratories, Stanford University and Oxford University. The collection includes general correspondence files, diaries (1937-41), notebooks and notes (1937-77), articles and reports (1937-80), awards and drawings. Additional material received 1985 and 1987 includes correspondence, research files, notebooks, patent records, and publications. . . . Professor of Applied Physics at Stanford University and world renowned communications scientist, Rudolf Kompfner came to Stanford in 1973 after a distinguished career at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Oxford University, and with British government research' (www [dot] oac [dot] cdlib [dot] org/findaid/ark:/13030/c89p301s/).
