Lazarev and V. S. Kemenov. The main objective of this extensive publication is to provide a comprehensive picture of the development of Russian art throughout the history of its development: from ancient times to the current edition of the Soviet era. The need to publish such a work lay not only in the desire to show the progress of the development of Russian art in the light of Soviet ideology, but also in the desire of art historians, first of all, I. Grabar, to fill in the gaps of the publication of the same name published before the revolution, in 1908-1915, due to the outbreak of the First World War, it remained unfinished. The publication was prepared by a team of researchers at the Institute of Art History of the USSR Academy of Sciences and was published in Moscow in 1953-1969. During the release process, the publication was somewhat expanded: the review of 18th-century art took up three volumes instead of the two originally planned, and three volumes dedicated to 19th-century art were each published in two books. The last volume, which probably should have been dedicated to Soviet art of the post-war period, was prepared for publication during the thaw and contains only additions to the remaining volumes.
