The convention to create Wisconsin's state constitution first assembled on October 5, 1846 and adjourned December 16, 1846. The printing of this JOURNAL, which documents the daily activities of the delegates and the progress of the convention, was probably finished in January 1847. The constitution framed by this convention, which outlawed slavery, gave the vote to Native Americans who were U.S. citizens, and essentially prohibited banking in Wisconsin, was submitted to popular vote in April 1847, and was rejected by the people.
