Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. 1 p.l., 304. lacking initial advert leaf. woodcut head & tailpieces & initials. 1 diagram in the text. contemporary calf, rebacked preserving endleaves (paper lightly embrowned, small paper repair in blank portion of title). First Edition of British naval commander, Sir Hovenden Walker's account of his failed attempt to capture the city of Quebec in August 1711. Published nine years after the expedition and five years after his peremptory dismissal from service, it is basically an attempt at self-vindication. The British Government's decision to attack Quebec was made in the wake of the easy conquest of Port-Royal (Annapolis Royal, N.S.) in 1710 by British and American forces commanded by Francis Nicholson. Such a spectacular military success under Tory auspices would reap political rewards and bring a swift and favourable end to the war. The project, however, was shrouded in secrecy, ill-planned, and attended by disaster. Lacking adequate provisions and without reliable and competent pilots, the force, consisting of nine ships of war, two bomb vessels, and sixty transports and tenders, carrying approximately seventy-five hundred troops and marines, met with gale and heavy fog. Seven transports and one storeship were wrecked, and nearly nine hundred lives were lost. After two months, Walker abandoned all attempts to complete his mission and returned to England. The disaster was forgotten until 1715 and the accession of George I, who called the Whigs back to power. Walker's name was struck from the list of Admirals and the half-pay list and he was summoned to account for his conduct. Retiring to South Carolina for two years, he composed this detailed and personal record of the affair, based on memory, a pocket diary, and various letters and documents supplied to him by the secretary of the Admiralty, Josiah Burchett (most of Walker's original books, journals and charts from the expedition perished in an explosion in 1711).
