Beschreibung

Beschreibung:

Journal of the Senate of South Carolina for its sessions of 1861, held at the end of the first year of the Civil War. This Senate was part of the same South Carolina General Assembly that had voted the year before to call a state convention to consider the question of secession, leading to the outbreak of hostilities at Fort Sumter in April. The Journal covers the called session that convened on November 4 and adjourned on November 6 as well as the annual session that convened on November 28 and recessed on December 21. Among the issues taken up by the Senate were the appointment of electors for president and vice president of the newly formed Confederate States of America, the raising of troops and funds for the war, the question of legislators accepting military commissions, the election of the state's senators to the Congress of the Confederate States, and the opening of South Carolina's ports to global commerce. Also included are a total of ten messages from the Governor Francis Wilkinson Pickens to the General Assembly, two from the first session and eight from the second. One of the messages concerns the fire that devastated Charleston on December 11, 1861. Crandall, Parrish & Willingham, and OCLC all note 248 pages, though our copy has 252 pages. A revealing look at the legislative practicalities of war and governance of a Southern state at the beginning of the Civil War. SABIN 87526. PARRISH & WILLINGHAM 3900. CRANDALL 1961. Gathered signatures, partially stitched. First eighteen signatures completely loose with original stab holes. Occasional tanning, moderate foxing, some soiling (especially toward the rear leaves). About very good. Untrimmed and partially unopened. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 62794
