Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. Complete set of two volumes. Rebound in brown buckram. There is wear and rubbing to the spine edges and corners of the rebinding. Some light foxing to some of the pages. Some of the illustrated plates have abstaining at the edges, which looks to have been the condition they were in when the book was bound. This was a landmark publication of the time, chronicling the establishment and development of the Salt Lake Valley and with a detailed sociological and historical look at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. 1861 first edition in English after the French edition. Complete set of two volumes. Both volumes have been re-cased, with the original spine laid over. There is wear and rubbing to the spine edges and corners, with the corners worn through. Volume 1 has discolored and faded spots on the front cover and the front cover is bowed outward a bit. The text blocks on both volumes are tight and the pages are clean and complete. The plates and map are present and in very good condition. A significant imprint in Mormon history. Rémy made collections of botanical and geological specimens, shells, and published works on his journeys and observations, including an early record of a visit to the island of Moloka, and this report on the Mormon people of Utah published in French in 1860. "The truth, so often perverted, will be vindicated in this work. Of those who have written on the Mormons, by far the greater number have derived their information from sources little to be relied on. The historians and travellers who have been their guides, have either never inspected the facts on the spot, or have looked at them from the point of view of their own foregone opinions, and too often of their passions. I have had the advantage of seeing with my own eyes, and my readers, I hope, will be sensible of it. Free, moreover, as far as I am aware, from all prejudice, I am able to affirm that I have contemplated the moral side of the picture with the same eye and the same impartialiltly as I have the physical side. The good and the bad have been exhibited; but if I correct erroneous opinions, I am far from offering myself as an apologist. It is the consciousness of this sincerity and impartiality which has inspired me with some confidence, and imparted to me the desire of presenting myself before the public. With serious and earnest men, truth is always the first of considerations, and it is for such I write." - from the preface. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 87431
