To appreicate the reasons why the Jewish Publication Society offers the volume to the public the reader must know something about both its author and its contents. Leo Baeck represented the profound thought and the tragic fate of the Jewish people during the first half of the twentieth century. Continuing his family's rabbincial tradition, he came to Berlin just before World War I and soon rose to a position of leadership in the community. Moreover, he neglected neither Jewish scholarship nor his inspired teaching. When tragedy struck the German Jewish community in the 1930's, he refused to leave his post in Germany and by his work and his words kept alive the courage of its doomed Jewish population. Inevitably, however, he landed in a concentration camp, but was miraculously saved from extermination. He was released after the war and, despite his advancing years, became absorbed in the task of strengthening Judaism in the western world. He did so by his presence, by his writing and by his devotion to the cause of liberal Judaism. A Great and revered personality himself and example of German Judaism at its best and most tragic, he departed this life on Novmeber 2, 1957, at the age of eighty~four. Throughout his active life, espcially in the years preceding the outbreak of World War II, Dr. Baeck interpreted Judaism. One of his great works, translated into English as "The Essence Of Judaism", was written in the 1920's . Even greater influence was exerted by his briefer essays, especially those dealing with the emergence of Christianity out of Judaism and with the differences between the attitudes and institutions of the two religions. The present volume contains his most important analyses in this field. "Mystery and Commandment" and especially "Romantic Religion" should have been made available long ago to English readers. these essays can hardly be matched for broad scholarship, depth of understanding and stimulating presentation. The reader of this volume will find himself in touch with a rare spirit. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 6131804
