In good condition. Boards are lightly worn with edge wear and minor scuffing. Light dryness along hinges. Gilt work remains bright and intact on spine. Text block evenly toned, free of marginalia. First illustrated edition of this clever social and political satire of France's July Monarchy that had a prodigious success when it was first published in 1843. This volume is splendidly illustrated throughout with 32 full-page wood-engravings and 200 vignettes after drawings by renown French caricaturist Jean Ignace Isidore Grandville, generally known by the pseudonym of J. J. Grandville. The illustrator died on 17 March 1847, only a few months after this book was completed. Though the designs of Grandville featured in this volume are occasionally unnatural and absurd, they usually display keen analysis of character and marvellous inventive ingenuity, and his humour is always tempered and refined by delicacy of sentiment and a vein of sober thoughtfulness.
