The Jockey Club: Or a Sketch of the Manners of the Age, in Three Parts, Copied from the Tenth London Edition, Re-Printed by Thomas Greenleaf, New-York, 1793, 202 pp plus contents, full original leather, 8.75 x 5.25 , 8vo. In good condition. Light wear to surface of leather with scuffing to edges and corners. Slight loss at right edge of spine, middle. Affects spine label. Overall scratched and worn in appearance. Worming to pastedown top corner to leaf V of preface. Early printed bookseller s ticket of H. & P. Rice, Philadelphia on pastedown. Worming has affected the signature on the top corner of the fly. Early manuscript ownership of Mrs. Van Dyke on title page. Interior lightly toned with minor instance of foxing. Front board is fragile, but intact. Binding intact. Please see photos. A satirical expose' of British aristocracy; due to its identifiable portraits of some members of élite society, its publisher was fined £100 and imprisoned in Newgate Prison. Pigott (d. 1794) was an ardent champion of the French Revolution. This was the first of two scurrilous pamphlets on London society, with which he seems to have been well acquainted. .
