Red cloth, 8vo, 78 pp. Benton's account of Baskerville was originally privately printed and published in Boston in1914; "Benton shows how Baskerville was concerned with all facets of book making. The printer's earlier experience with Japanware prompted his hot-pressing of the paper to create a glossy surface. He experimented with inks, and he used heavy brass plates in his presswork. Baskerville introduced greater variation between the thick and thin strokes in his typefaces and so created a modern font, though Philippe Grandjean had tried a similar design as early as 1702." - Rosenblum.
