Small pocket 12mo, pp [4], 284, portrait frontispiece of Johnson, bound in contemporary polished calf with black label, spine gilt, corners and spne ends worn, spine rubbed but quite a sound binding and internally clean and tight with formalised Latin [male] ownership at the front dated 1798, a good copy, SEVENTH EDITION; as Alston points out '"These dictionaries, though having Johnson s name on the title page, really have nothing whatever to do with the full texts.' i.e. of Dr Johnson's dictionary. In his introduction to this edition [the earliest listed under this title in ESTC is a fifth of the same year] the Rev Hamilton of the Academy in Hemel Hempsted states 'the editor has procured a type of unequelled symmetry and beauty; the aper is of the finest quality and texture, and the typographical execution unrivalled.' And indeed the incredibly tiny typeface is arranged with great care, clearly aimed at securing a place in an increasingly crowded market for school dictionaries, perfect eyesight an assumption. But what is the significane of the word 'drawback' in parenthesis at the foot of the title page? This edition not recorded in Alston, only the Maidstone Public Library recorded in ESTC, all subsequent editions recorded in just single or few copies suggesting a very low survival rate for this publication.
