Having practised as a surveyor, largely in search of additional pasture for grazing, he went on to lead six expeditions and became the first explorer to cross the continent from south to north. This work covers his second expedition. They departed in April 1859 in search of a permanent freshwater route to the north. Although they didn't reach the northern boundary, he did find the watered route hopes for.
