One of 1000 unnumbered copies. An ex-lib copy bound in worn three quarter leather. Marbled edges. xlvii+ 440 pp. plus XII folding plates at rear. Interior clean as are all twelve plates. The first volume of the Long Island Historical Society's publications. This issue contains the journal of the voyage made from Amsterdam in 1679 in the ship "Charles" with Thomas Singleton as captain. The owner of both the ship and its cargo was Margaret Filipse (spelled Phillipse in New Amesterdam/New York) who also charged 75 guilders for passengers. Margaret Hardenbroek Phillipse (1637-1691) was considered the wealthiest woman in early colonial New York having inherited a fortune from her merchant first husband and afterward marrying another wealthy merchant Frederick Phillipse. Margaret herself was a businesswoman, acting as agent for Dutch traders and also trading furs for small household items. Schilders account beings with the sailing from Europe to New York (the city had been turned over to English control and re-named in 1666) , described the time at sea in great detail, describes the time spent in Manhattan and Brooklyn and meeting with such early settlers as Cortelyou, Carteret, and de Hart. The party also spent some time in New Jersey. After leaving New York, the group traveled south to the Chesapeak Bay and Delaware and Maryland before returning to New York. They would later travel up the Hudson River to towns in uptate New York and eventually to Boston. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers E27686
