Illustrated with 6 engraved plates including the frontispiece (5 portraits and one landscape). viii, 622pp, 5 plates, pages uncut, foxing & edge browning. The 1st edition was published in 1782, 2nd edition in 1786 with a 3rd in 1811, and there was a Dublin edition in 1783. (ESTC T160571. Allibone 1553. Lowndes 1823. Graesse 192). PENNANT, naturalist, antiquary, traveller, whose accounts of his journeys in Scotland, to London, and especially in North Wales, are among his best literary works. Provenance: with 2 bookplates to the front paste down, one unknown, one for Hugh Walpole. Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE (1884 1941) was an English novelist. He was the son of an Anglican clergyman, intended for a career in the church but drawn instead to writing. Among those who encouraged him were the authors Henry James and Arnold Bennett. His skill at scene-setting and vivid plots, as well as his high profile as a lecturer, brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. He was a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s but has been largely neglected since his death. Approximately 9 ½ inches tall.
