He authored some 20 useful and practical works on agricultural based on his own observation and experiences of as a farmer's son and grandson from Bungo, on the southern island of Kyushu. . He was greatly influenced by Chinese & Dutch learning [Rangaku] in Nagasaki as well. . Some of his works covered cultivation of sugar, cotton, indigo, paper, wax trees, cedar and other useful cash crop plants for impoverished farmers. . He was a famous author and renaissance man he wrote easy-to-understand illustrated agricultural, instructional guides for the neglected of Japan's lowest class citizen, the peasant-farmer. . . These kinds of books helped the poor farmer how to endure natural disasters, severe weather, containing positive steps to successfully pass through harsh winters and improve their productivity. . His works were avidly read and heeded by Japan's farming class.
