Title slips with small nics, those of v.1 pt.1 and pt.2 with hand-writing on (hand-inscriptions to versos of v.1 pt.2 and v.1 pt.1 also). Light water-stains to volumes, particularly v.1 pt.1. `Kaika Mondo` was published as a text on the problems surrounding the great societal upheaval in Japan initiated by the Meiji Restoration (itself a consequence of the opening of Japan to US and foreign trade). Includes 8 colour woodblock-printed illustrations by Kyosai. Kawanabe Kyosai was a famous Japanese Edo/Meiji period woodblock print artist, who was an apprentice of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and pupil at the Kano School, and who often focussed on Japanese folklore in his artworks.
