Afterward it was produced in various theatres throughout Russia. Like Andreyev's earlier story, 'The Abyss,' this drama created a sensation. It became the topic of discussion everywhere in Russia. . . . Mock trials were staged in various cities where the play was presented, and Katerina was acused and denounced by some and warmly defended by others. For the most part, men censured her, while the women defended her.'' This authorized translation from the original manuscript, with a preface by Herman Bernstein, was given in New York in 1929, and ran for 19 performances. It was staged by Eva Le Gallienne (daughter of the poet Richard Le Gallienne) and featured Walter Beck, Donald Cameron, and Mme. Alla Nazimova. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 000448
