From Library Journal:
How can parents relate better to their adult children? While both books ask this fundamental question, they address the issues completely differently. Grown-Up Children takes a rather lighthearted view of the problem. Each chapter covers one potentially problematical situation (such as weddings, holidays, and alternative lifestyles) and gives a series of exercises that are intended to help parents empathize with their offspring in such a situation. The authors give the impression that although parents may have difficulties dealing with their children as adults, the problems are not insurmountable if both parent and child are willing to do just a little work. Your Kids Are Grown takes a slightly more pessimistic view of the whole situation. It is divided into three sections: The first outlines the major problem areas between parents and their adult children; the second describes various ways to mend relationships, focusing mainly on how to achieve better communication; and the last briefly touches on the "moving on without them" part of the title, describing the developmental changes experienced by aging parents and ways to cope with these changes. In comparison with Grown-Up Children, this book seems to expect a higher level of pathology, and Toder makes a strong case for the use of professional therapy to resolve conflicts. However, patrons seeking informal, comforting advice may find her approach a bit heavy-handed. As both books cover just about the same range of problems, whether to choose the more anecdotal and optimistic Grown-Up Children or Toder's more therapy- and research-based book will depend largely on your collection's sophistication. Public libraries that can afford to should buy both.
