From School Library Journal:
PreS-Gr 2--A weak story that attempts to address too many issues. King Odorant never bathes, a situation that disgusts his subjects. Although he is oblivious to his gamy scent, he is plagued by flies-thousands of them. Finally, he begs his royal wizard for some relief. Before conjuring them away, the man gives a preachy speech stressing that the insects are an important part of the kingdom and suggests that perhaps Odorant could use a good soak. The king will have none of it. In a clumsy case of foreshadowing, the monarch promises that he will submit to a daily bath if he should ever decide that he wants the flies to come back. At dawn, every bug has disappeared. The predictable ecological result follows. Everyone, from spiders right up the food chain to cattle and humans, packs up and moves away. After a contrived lecture about the need for all creatures to live in balance, the wizard reminds the king of the bath clause and calls all the creatures, starting with the flies, back to Reeksland. The goofy art accompanying this didactic tale is so saccharine that you can expect the book, like its hero, to attract flies. Reach for bathtime classics such as Audrey Wood's King Bidgood's in the Bathtub (Harcourt, 1985) or Diana White's No Bath for Boris (Dutton, 1990; o.p.) instead.
