A detailed 17th century garden diary. Paul Klingenberg, was a trusted confidant of King Frederick III of Denmark, whom he served as Postmaster General and as gardener, among a variety of other positions. Klingenberg began to keep a detailed garden diary, or day-book, in 1639, of his own impressive garden in Holstein. His son of the same name continued the diary after his death, transferring the location of his garden notes to his residence in Jutland. Both parts of the diary were written in German, and contain vast information on the purchases and import of plants, weather conditions, fruit trees and exotic flowers; the younger Klingenberg was preoccupied with exotic plants popular at the time, and built a hothouse of the very latest design. The original German manuscript disappeared in 1765 and was not found again until recently, in the Danish Public Records Office. The lavish new edition here is complemented with previously unpublished 17th century botanical drawings. This is a fabulous piece of gardening history, and a substantial addition to the library of any passionate gardener. A very ambitious tanslation. , English w/ German summary, Year1997, Illust.
