K’s Kitchen is a cookbook with a heart. It is a mix of real good recipes, real good stories, and real, live people growing up in the 1930's and 1940's. We lived through the depression and the Second World War, surviving by hard work and homemade fun, and some really good down-home cooking. K’s kitchen was the heart of our home. We gathered there three times a day – for breakfast, dinner, and supper - holding hands around the table while we thanked God for our food. K spent much of her day in the kitchen, cooking, canning, churning, setting lightbread dough to rise, and making something special for dessert. We joined her there making homemade yeast-rising doughnuts, pulling home-grown molasses taffy, cooking parched peanuts in the old wood-burning stove, and eating snow cream during the winter of the big snow. Written by Saralou, the fifth of seven rowdy, rambunctious children who run in and out of the pages of this book. Born in 1939 and living to a ripe old age in good health by the grace of God, the author spends her days working in her garden, cooking, canning, and eating that good garden produce, remembering how it was in the old days, and pecking away at the keyboard getting it all written down.
