Kuwait National Day was first held on 19 June 1962 to celebrate the first anniversary of independence, and thereafter on 25 February to avoid the heat and mark Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah's rise to power in 1950. The 1978 event was Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad's first as Emir, and the first to feature the new National Anthem. This internal staff memo dated 13 Rabi'I, 1398H / 21 Feb 1978, confirms the Day as an official paid holiday, the closure of the Display Centre and resident mail service, and that "employees essential to certain operations" are expected to remain on duty.
