The work was compiled and translated by one of Hearn's old pupils, M. Otani. It contains 51 letters from Hearn to his friends, all completely presented in English & Japanese translation for the first time under one cover. . Letters to: . Mr. Ellwood Hendrick, 9 letters. . S. A Letter From Japan: 1 letter . *** VERY RARE SIGNED, DATED PRESENTATION COPY FROM MITCHELL McDONALD TO CHARLES DENBY [American Minister to Chi a] . The inscription reads: "With kind greeting to my friend and fellow countryman, Charles Denby Yokohama March 5, 1921. . WHO WAS MITCHELL McDONALD: Mitchell McDonald, a paymaster for the United States Navy and also the principal owner of the Grand Hotel in Yokohama. In addition to their close friendship until Hearn s death in 1904, McDonald also served as the author s literary executor. Mitchell McDonald perished in the Great Kanto Earthquake in September 1923, just 4 months after presenting this copy to Denby. Also perished in the great conflagration were all of the printing plates for the whole series of books described above. . Mitchell also wrote a personal letter to Hearn's three best and favorite pupils as an introduction to this series, that facsimile letter is found in volume 4: INSECT LITERATURE & in volume 8: ISLAND VOYAGES. . WHO WAS CHARLES DENBY [1830-1904]: He was a U.S. Union officer in the Civil War and an American diplomat, May 29, 1885, he was appointed Minister to China. Denby remained at the post through 1898, longest serving envoy to China. He was also the author of two important books: . CHINA. STATE DEPARTMENT PAPERS: 1885-1886, DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENCE NO. 44. & CHINA AND HER PEOPLE: Being The Observations, Reminiscences And Conclusions Of An American Diplomat, 1906. . *** For Otani's dedication to Hearn, he created this series of 'Hearn Memorial Translations,' originally planned as a six volume set, containing the following separately published titles: . 1. DIARIES AND LETTERS 2. IMPRESSIONS OF JAPAN 3. LETTERS FROM TOKYO 4. INSECT LITERATURE 5. KOKORO 6. SEA LITERATURE . In addition to the above were . 7. 8. ISLAND VOYAGES 9. KWAIDAN . This series have been out of print and the plates destroyed in the great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. There have been no reprints since the reprinting s prior to 1923. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** A RARE BOOK & SERIES: This series was completely wiped out in the 1923 Kanto earthquake, no plates or copies remained in the publisher's warehouse. Copies are currently obscure and seldom found. . *** CONDITION: The book is bound in the original publisher's navy blue cloth, with gold-stamped bamboo design spine titles, with Hearn's family crest [Mon] of a heron stamped on the front cover.
