Eight 18th-century letters from Jesuit missionaries in the Americas, concerning missions in Canada (New France), as well as in Louisiana, Lower California, and Haiti; selected from 'Lettres édifiantes et curieuses' published in Paris 1760-88. pp(4)XVIII(2)264. Marbled edges. Later full green leather. Smooth spine titled & decorated in gilt. Boards with boldly blindstamped Budded Cross and other decorations within gilt-ruled borders, and gilt-ruled edges. Marbled endpapers. Spine slightly faded. Boards slightly rubbed and a little marked. Adhesion between pastedowns and boards not quite flush, resulting in a few slightly lifted creases on pastedowns. Blank white inner-facing sides of flyleaves at both front and rear patchily toned, slightly affecting facing half-title and final page of contents. Contents otherwise with occasional light spotting, and a number of light corner creases. Binding in good order and holding firmly, contents generally clean and tight. GOOD+ copy / bon état.
