Brown leather hardcover in very good condition with professional restoration to hinges and spine, retaining the original labels. 624 very clean unmarked pages nicely enhanced by black and white illustrations. A beautiful copy of this First Edition, First State with the image of Twain in flames on page 441 ( The page with Twain depicted in flames was later removed at the request of Mrs. Clemens who considered it morbid), "The St. Louis Hotel" caption on page 443, and *it* instead of *is* on page 444. The binding is tight with NO cocking or leaning with minor wear to the edges. The pages are clean with NO writing, marks or bookplates in the book. A wonderful copy in collector's condition.
