Illustrated by 32 photographs, including frontispiece, by Mabel Eardley-Wilmot with tissue guards printed in red ink with extracts from the poem. Decorated by initials. The most influential work of Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904), poet and journalist born in Gravesend.:'The vast majority of Arnold's copious literary output is likely to remain undisturbed by future generations of readers. Such modern interest as there is in his poetry stems almost exclusively from the role played by the Light of Asia in popularising Buddhist thought in the West' (DNB). Arnold taught in India only from 1857-61 but mastered the principal languages of the subcontinent. This versified life of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, proved immensely popular, although it was also criticised for its apparent promotion of Buddhist values, many of which, such as vegetarianism, were adopted by Arnold himself, although he remained nominally a member of the Church of England. From its first edition of 1879, The Light of Asia appeared in over sixty English editions, eighty US, and in numerous translations.
