Beschreibung:

487,[23]pp. including illustrated advertisements, plus one plate and two one- sided advertising leaves. 12mo. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Early pencil inscriptions in margins of almanac. Light scattered foxing, else very good. The last Longworth directory with contributions from its founder, David Longworth. Longworth began publishing his almanac and New York City register and directory in 1796, providing his patrons with extensive, up-to-date information on duties and other commercial concerns, major institutions, and city residents. Most of the almanacs were embellished with commentary from Longworth, excerpts from other books he had recently published, and/or bits of humor and verse. David Longworth handed over editorial duties to his son, Thomas, in 1806 and stepped aside as publisher of the directory after the 1817 edition. He died in September, 1821. In the present volume, references are made to the "opposition" directories, which Longworth derides in an advertisement as "despicable" imitators who have "nicked" an unwitting public. The verso of the contents leaf consists of a full-page cartoon, which depicts one man, with arms full of Longworth's directories, about to step on an "OLD DIRECTORY," and having his rear end bitten by a giant snapping turtle, which itself is stepping on a leaf reading, "ART OF POACHING." A printing press is depicted in the background, and a second man, apparently the keeper of the turtle, is pointing at the first and declaring, "How he nicks 'em." The final fourteen leaves feature numerous handsome advertisements, several of which are illustrated. The directory of New York residents, who are listed with their addresses and means of livelihood, contains 24,300 names, more than triple the number in the 1796 volume. After David Longworth's death, Thomas assumed full control and continued editing and publishing the work through 1842. SPEAR, p.242. Thomas Longworth, "Advertisement" in LONGWORTH'S AMERICAN ALMANAC. (1822), pp.495-96. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers WRCAM36204

(NEW YORK CITY). LONGWORTH, David, and LONGWORTH, Thomas. Longworth's American Almanac, New-York Register, and City Directory.New York: David Longworth, 1809. [5]-392,[4]pp. 12mo. Modern calf, raised bands, spine gilt. Front and rear boards stamped with the seal of the City of New York in gilt. Gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Bookplate of Edwin Holden on verso of front free endpaper. Faint early ink signature in upper margin of titlepage. Slight scuffing at upper joints, else fine. SPEAR, p.238. Luxuriously bound, fine copy of Longworth's rare 1809 almanac and New York City register and directory, from the library of Edwin Holden and bearing his bookplate. Holden was a prominent New York bibliophile and one of the primary founders of the Club Bindery in 1898. David Longworth published his popular almanac and directory annually from 1796 to 1817, after which point the publication was assumed by Thomas Longworth and continued into the 1840s. In the present volume, the almanac by Andrew Beers is embellished with an anatomical map of the zodiac, a sonnet, and an essay by "Brackenridge" (presumably Hugh Henry Brackenridge) entitled, "Liberty of Press and Express." The register that follows contains extensive lists of duties and other commercial concerns and a detailed listing of major New York institutions, including government bodies, fraternal lodges, insurance companies, banks, and hospitals. The City Directory lists 14,450 New York residents with their addresses and means of livelihood, providing a fascinating cross-section of New York in the late Federal period. Spear lists a plan of New York in the 1809 volume, which is not present here. The plan, however, is not mentioned in the title or contents of the volume, and there is further reason to believe that Spear was working with an anomaly and that the present copy is, in fact, complete as issued. For example, the AAS copy, acquired by them in 1829, has no plan. Despite their popularity, few of the Longworth almanacs survive, particularly those published before 1820. Spear locates five copies.
