Beschreibung
Rare revised third edition of Lady Audley's Secret, the first of two 'bigamy novels' that made Mary Elizabeth Braddon's name. Bound in the publisher's royal blue dot-and-line grain cloth, covers blocked in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Volume I has severe fading to the upper cover, small loss of cloth at the head of the spine and is heavily rubbed. The bindings of volumes II and III are closer to very good condition with much brighter spine lettering and cloth; rubbing at head of both spines with short tears to cloth. Internally all three volume have the armorial bookplate of Joseph Barker on the first pastedown, whose name is crossed through in blue black ink, probably by 'G Stringer 1892' whose large and confidently writtern name appears opposite and below that a note in pencil by Mrs Edith Major who inherited the books in 1951. Edith Major's pencilled reading notes also appear on each of the final pastedowns. The preliminary endpapers of all three volumes are marked where other items have been pasted in and subsequently removed. The texts are complete: Volume I has a 2 page catalogue to the rear; Volume II has two gatherings around pp145-176 which have pulled loosed but not detached; 4 pp catalogue to rear; Volume III has 2pp catalogue to rear. Lady Audley's Secret was an enormous success, running through nine separate editions in the final months of 1862. Of these, the most significant is this third edition which was the first revised edition in which Braddon set out a complicated plot development at the end of volume 3. Through the novel Braddon achieved financial independence for life and William Tinsley was launched as a major publisher.
