Our copy starts with the second preliminary leaf [*]1, which is blank except for a printed rule and five lines of letterpress beginning on verso"In Effigiem Ioan"as the Cullman Library copy (BF1682 .T39 1614).4 pages (sig. â 1-2) with the half-titleLa physiognomie en sa splendeurare misbound following p. 190 in the second volume also in accordance with the Cullman Library copy. Some copies are bound with a separately printed engraved title, which our copy lacks. In 19th century half leather. Collation: *8, 2*6, 3*8, a-l8, m4, A4, B-M8, N1-3, â 2, N4-6, O-P8. pp. [44], 184, 190, [4], 191-196, [32]. First edition of this scarce scientific treatise with a tribute to Galileo "the pearl of astrologers of this century" and his achievements. The volume consists of three distinct works on comets, astrology and with new pagination, a section on physiognomy and chiromancy. Taxil praises Christopher Clavius (V1: p, 179) and Galileo, saying that Galileo is "the pearl of astrologers of this century" (V1: p. 173) and "the honor and glory of our age, as he will be an object of wonder to ages to come" (V1: p. 175) (Thorndike). He also mentions Galileo's telescope,"un certain instrument de longue veue"(V1: p. 173),which was invented very recently, in 1609, and the four moons of Jupiter ("quatre nouvelles planettes, lesquelles suivent de fort près Jupiter"pp. 174-5) that Galileo discovered in 1610. Jean Taxil (1564-1618) was a French physician and astrologer from Arles, known for his important medical treatise on epilepsy,Traicté de l'épilepsie, 1602. Scarce on the market, Rarebookhub lists only one auction record of the title. Thorndike VI, 97, 169-70 . Binding rubbed at the extremities. First leaf with contemporary or somewhat later possessor's or presentation inscriptions, and notes on the author by a different hand, both in ink. Scattered foxing. Occasional stains. Overall in very good condition. First edition.
