This work is a quarto, with the signatures running as [A4], B4. ESTC citation number R218183. Collated from the ESTC, complete. An interesting letter discussing the persecution of Roman Catholics in England. The Church of England had taken over as the standard Church in England after the 1530s and Henry VIII's separation from the Roman church. After this, Catholics became persecuted within England. An example of fervent anti-Catholic attitude of England at this time was the fabrication of the Popish Plot by Titus Oates, which alleged that there was a solid and extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. Oates is referenced to by the author of this treatise, mentioning Oates' plot as an example of the persecution against the Catholics. The author references the innocent men who were killed after suspicion that was thrown upon them by Titus Oates, with at least fifteen men being killed from 1678-1681 due to Oates. In this letter, the author is scathing towards the Houses of Parliament and their attitudes to Catholics. At the time that this was written, there was an Exclusion Bill trying to be put through the Houses of Parliament, that would exclude the King's brother, James Duke of York, from the throne of England, and he was a Catholic. However, Charles was against the Bill, and dissolved the English Parliament four times to stop the Bill from passing. James did come to the throne in 1685 when Charles II died. Part of the fear that the English Anglicans had was made upon seeing the Catholic King of France, Louis XIV, reigning in an absolutist way, and thus they wanted to prevent a similar monarchy from developing in England. This was one of the reasons that the Exclusion Crisis started in England. Written anonymously, signed 'F.P.' to the tail of page 11. ESTC does not attribute an author. With 'A Postscript to the House of Commons' on page 12-14. A very scarce letter against the Houses of Parliament for their treatment of Roman Catholics. Disbound.
