Beschreibung
This book is in remarkable condition. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. They show no soiling at all and just a very small amount of wear, a little rubbing on the sides of the spine and on the bottom edges. The spine (and its gilt lettering and design) looks terrific (second photo). This book is perfectly bound. There are no cracks or spaces and the pages are nicely tight throughout. The page edges are marbled as are the inside covers and end papers. All of these are perfectly clean and unworn. There's very little wrong with the interior of this book. I'll now identify the few minor imperfections: There is light foxing on the tissue guard protecting the first of two different title pages. Neither title page has any foxing. The blank verso of the first title page has two or three small light spots of foxing. The second title page has a speck-sized spot of soiling, and an old signature off the top edge. I can't make out the name, although guesses could be made. On the second end paper, which is white and blank, there are two circular stamps (dime-sized) with blue print inside reading 'Flintshire County Council Record Office'. And on page 85 at the white bottom margin there is another identical stamp.'Flintshire' is Flintshire, East Wales where a previous owner's estate (Penbedw) was situated (read below). How do the text pages look in this book? Fantastic. Not only is there no foxing to be found anywhere, these pages are exceptionally clean (I saw one small spot on the white margin of one page). Moreover, they are somehow bright, 1819 and bright, not the least bit toned. There condition appears to be perfect, that is, there are no creases and no dogeared corners. There's also no extraneous writing in the text, no underlining, no notes, etc. the only writing in the book is the referenced signature. At some point in time this book came into the ownership of a V.D. Buddicom of Penbedw (a 2 by 1 1/2" white label on the front inside cover has printed 'From the Library of Miss V.D. Buddicom, Penbedw'). My crackerjack research has revealed that this was a Venetia Digby Buddicom whose 'father Harry William Buddicom, like his father before him (who worked on the Grand Junction railway and designed the 'Crewe' type engine before moving to France to work on the Paris and Rouen railway, amassing his fortune by buying shares in the fledging railway companies which gained value as the popularity of the railway system increased), was a skilled engineer and inventor. They had designed and built locomotives and railways throughout Europe, South America and elsewhere and were leading figures in the first generation of railway engineers. Her mother, Augusta Henrietta Sophia Digby of Studland Manor in Dorset, was also from a well-to-do family. One of her forbears was Sir Everard Digby, a co-conspirator with Guy Fawkes.' Her brother Walter and his family lived on the Penbedw estate in Nannerch and they were indeed a society family with considerable influence owning much of the land on the Clwydian hills and a 3,000 acre estate in Nantglyn near Denbigh (including the land that lies beneath the Brenig reservoir) as well as properties in France, Ireland and England. The family funded the restoration of the churches in Nannerch and Cilcain and built the village school in Nannerch. Venetia Digby Buddicom, built the village hall in Nannerch as a memorial to her father and to Walter.' Interesting provenance. For prospective international buyers the relatvely lighter weight of this book will allow me to reduce the stated shipping cost down from the $34.00 to $23.00. A price reduction will amend the invoice after the order is placed and before any payment is finalized. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 001743
