He took orders in the Church of England and served parishes at Liverpool and London, the latter at St. Giles, Cripplegate. In 1804 he was appointed to the living of Westham, in Essex, which he held until his death. He was a writer of note, with a History of the Christian Church (1790) in two volumes, and several other commended works to his name. His Treatise on the Composition of a Sermon (1787) was included in The Young Preacher's Manual (1819), a valuable resource for pastors learning the art of public speaking.
