Inhaltsangabe: The purpsoe of this book is to open a window to a reality that lies some 500 - 600 years back in time. A closer look at late medieval Norway shows that both people and society were more internationally oriented than what has been thought of in general. A good many people were on the move; Norwegians went abroad and foreigners came to Norway. A center for much of what was going on in Europe was the papal court in Rome. The rich holdings of the Vatican Archives represents therefore a most important source of information also about different aspects of the Norwegian way of life and thinking at that time. After detailed studies of Vatican Archives documents we have the pleasure of presenting a book about how the lives of Norwegians in the late middle ages were formed and framed by the supernational institution and ideology of the Catholic Church. In this book we will direct the attention to the geographical area that, in the middle ages, constituted the diocese of Stavanger, i.e. today's Rogaland, the Agder counties and parts of Hallingdal and Valdres. In the different chapters we will show how the lives of our forefathers and foremothers were connected to the Holy See in especially three fields: 1) the judicial field, illustrated by supplications to the pope for absolutions, dispensations, and licenses, 2) the economic field, as marked by the papal taxation of this area, and 3) the cultic field, as shown by the collection of relics from holy men and women from far and near.
