2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A superb full crushed morocco binding by Grieve of Edinburgh with raised bands and very fine and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Rather spectacular tooling to the boards and gilt dentelles and top edges. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Some light scratching and an area of fading to the upper board of volume I, otherwise in fine condition. This set is number 20 of an edition of 150 large paper copies. With 40 portraits in colour of Brummell and his contemporaries. An important figure in Regency England, Beau Brummell was for many years the arbiter of an English gentleman's fashion. However, Brummel has since been the subject of numerous literary portrayals has become a pre-eminent example of the dandy, who is best remembered for his rejection of overly ornate clothes for well-fitted bespoke garments. After a chronological narrative of Brummell's early life before Captain Jesse elaborates on Brummell's accomplishments, influence on society, and political views, before zooming in on important events in Brummell's life. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the spine. Rather bumped to the head of the spine, less to to the tail.
