Beschreibung
By all accounts this is an unusual work of fiction, written as though an autobiography: with the book's main character involved in a sequence of highly unlikely events; interspersed with digressions on a wide range of philosophical, mathematical and religious topics. (The following comments refer to both volumes unless otherwise stated). Calf leather boards - light brown; rubbed at the perimeters; revealing the card/paper material underneath. The spine includes the author's surname and the book's title in gilt; set against a black background. Above and below this black band are decorative gilt patterns. There is also rubbing at the head and tail of the spine; particularly at its head. Top edge stained. Internally: printed on laid paper. There is a small library stamp on the reverse of the contents page (Selbourne Library). This appears to be the only library paraphernalia. The book's layout includes printed marginal notes throughout (see images). The pages are mildly to moderately tanned with occasional spotting; more evident on the preliminary and final ones. NB. Both front boards have separated from the book block; that of Vol. II has a front free endpaper attached. Vol. I: the contents page has an ink signature (John Maude, 1812) plus a pencil note at the top of the page (image). There is a much longer note in ink on the following page - images on request. Vol. II: the contents page is similarly inscribed. Again, the next page has some similar annotation; albeit shorter - images on request. Both consist of the elegant handwriting of another era. Pagination (Vol. I): ix, + Contents Pages (unpaginated), pp. 532. Pagination (Vol. II): iv, + Contents Pages (unpaginated), pp. 511. 130 x 205 mm.
