The first 2-volume edition of his life and letters was written by R E Prothero and Stanley's successor as Dean, G G Bradley, and published in 1893. This revised, compact and abridged edition was published in 1909. Its author, Rowland E Prothero (18511937) later 1st Baron Ernle was a Conservative politician, journalist, author and 1st class cricketer. Hardback in overall good condition. Cover in blue cloth, decorative impressed design on front, titles and decoration in gilt on spine. Bumped at top and bottom of spine and at corners. Decorative endpapers discoloured. Binding exposed between penultimate pages (list of other publications), otherwise intact. Text (561 pp, portrait frontispiece) very good. Gilt-edged along top.
