A complete twelve volume set of the works of Alfred Lord Tennyson, with a memoir written by his son. Complete in twelve volumes. Scarce in the original cloth binding. Edition de luxe. This edition consists of ten hundred and fifty copies. The works of Alfred Lord Tennyson, an English poet who was appointed Poet Laureate for much of Queen Victoria's reign. His work continues to be some of the most celebrated in the English language. Volumes one to four consist of A Memoir, written by his son Hallam Tennyson. Volumes five to twelve contain poems written during Tennyson's time as Poet Laureate. Each volume contains an illustrated frontispiece. Volume II is illustrated with three full page images, the second of which is bound to face page 88 rather than 84 as detailed in the list of illustrations. Volume III is illustrated with one full page image. Volume IV is illustrated with one full page image. Collated complete. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and minor rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine. Hinges tender but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Limitation statement:"1050 copies of the Edition de Luxe." **Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809 - 1892) was British poet famous for works such as "The Charge of the Light Brigade", and "In Memoriam", as well as the blank-verse poem-cycle on the Arthurian legends, "Idylls of the King". He was particularly admired by the Pre-Raphaelites, and is one of the most quoted writers in English. His son, Hallam Tennyson (1852 - 1928) wrote a biography of his father which comprises the first four volumes of this set. Condition: Very Good Plus. (Externally the set is about Near Fine.) There is light scattered foxing throughout, mostly at prelims, and volume III has some old damp-staining to one corner of the pages. Some pages are unopened. Top edges gilt, other edges trimmed. This is a limited issue of the "Biographical Edition", copy #5 of 25 copies made for America, with a numbered limitation leaf in each volume. Each volume has a frontispiece in colour, and several illustrations; the frontispieces of Volumes IV and XIV are signed in pencil by the Photographers, Walker & Boutall. The frontispiece of Volume XIV is from a photograph by Julia Margaret Cameron. One volume (V8) has two scratches across the front board, but this is a remarkably fine set, in lovely condition.
