1000s of pages; 8vo; half calf, raised bands, compartments with gilt ornaments and rules or red and black lettering pieces with gilt titles, light-brown cloth sides, textblock edges sprinkled light brown. Illustrated with several portraits, a foldout facsimile, plus two foldout pedigrees (all called for). This is the much-expanded and now scarce second edition, complete in nine volumes, of the work first written and published by John Nichols (1745-1826) in 1782 under a slightly different title ("Biographical and Literary Anecdotes of William Bowyer, Printer, F.S.A. and of Many of His Learned Friends"). Here Nichols provides useful biographical notes on numerous publishers, writers, and book collectors of the eighteenth century, including much on William Bowyer and his productions. (A separate standalone work, "Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century; Consisting of Authentic Memoirs and Original Letters of Eminent Persons," was issued between 1817 and 1858 as a sequel to the present work and is not included here.) Ex-library set: each of vols. I to VIII with bookplate, small circular stamp on title page, small numerical stamp on its verso, and small stamp on each textblock edge. No other markings found. Vol. IX does not show any of these markings, though its binding is nearly identical to the others. An overall very good, well-preserved set, attractively bound, its contents clean, Vol. I has small chip to foredge of title page and small abrasion on front flyleaf, and without obvious general signs of use; a few scattered minor scratches on covers or minor rubbing to edges.
